New details surrounding the death of former Ian Watkins have emerged in court, painting a grim picture of the fatal attack that took place inside HMP Wakefield one of Britain’s most notorious high-security prisons.
Watkins, the disgraced former frontman of Lostprophets, was reportedly killed in October 2025 inside the prison’s so-called “Monster Mansion” wing, an area known for housing dangerous and high-profile offenders. According to testimony heard in court, the fatal injuries included a deep 10.5cm slash wound that severed both his jugular vein and voice box.
Prison staff reportedly discovered Watkins suffering from multiple severe wounds to his head and neck shortly after cell doors were opened on the wing. Prosecutors allege the attack was carried out by inmates Rico Gedel, 25, and Samuel Dodsworth, 44, with Gedel accused of entering Watkins’ cell while Dodsworth allegedly acted as a lookout and assisted in disposing of the weapon.
The improvised weapon was described as a Stanley-style blade attached to blue plastic using tape. CCTV footage shown in court allegedly captured Watkins briefly emerging from his cell while bleeding heavily from the neck before collapsing. Workers nearby reportedly alerted prison officers, who rushed to the scene in an unsuccessful attempt to save him.
During the hearing, prosecutors stated that Watkins identified his attacker moments before losing consciousness and suffering cardiac arrest.
Court testimony also claimed that Gedel later made disturbing remarks to officers after the incident, allegedly suggesting he wanted the killing to be remembered. Authorities say the attack appeared to be premeditated.
Watkins had been serving a lengthy prison sentence since 2013 after being convicted of multiple child sexual offences, including attempted rape of a baby and conspiracy to rape a child. He also admitted to possessing indecent images of children, some classified in the most severe category under UK law.
Sources inside the prison reportedly described the scene as chaotic and deeply disturbing, with emergency alarms sounding as officers attempted to secure the wing and place inmates under lockdown following the attack.
The trial surrounding Watkins’ killing is ongoing.
